Mission

Adoptees of Chicago’s mission is to create an adoptee-led,
accepting community for teen and young adult adoptees through embracing diversity, supporting personal growth, and fostering social dialogue.

Diversity

We recognize that the word ‘diversity’ can mean a lot of different things. Diversity, within the context of our teen and adult adoptee groups, loosely is defined as differences in physical makeup (ie. adopted from various countries), intangible qualities (ie. upbringings, values, beliefs), and lived experiences.
Teens: Adoptees of Chicago values developing a cohesive understanding with one another and embrace diversity within the teen group. We believe that the best way to be advocates for one another, as adoptees, is not only to meet and create connections, but to listen to everyone’s thoughts, stories, and feelings.
Young Adults: Adoptees of Chicago emphasizes varied lived experiences when valuing diversity for the adult adoptee group. Since the target age group is older, we recognize everyone who attends has faced different obstacles. Our hope and goal is to create space as we unpack past memories and empathize together.

Personal Growth

The Adoptees of Chicago community is your sanctuary for identity exploration, new friendships, and self confidence building.
Teens: We highly value creating a sanctuary for a teen adoptee’s personal growth journey. In these crucial identity-forming years, we find it important to incorporate self-confidence when recognizing and talking about one’s adoptee identity. We hope to accomplish this through a friendly and open environment that does not always need to be focused on adoption. Join us at our Socials with adoptees to make memories and create new friendships!
Young Adults: We strive to satisfy a need for a space of healing and recovery for adult adoptees. We recognize not everyone is in the same part of their journey. However, we value empowerment within one another. We hope to aid in each other’s growth and unique self-discoveries.

Social Dialogue

The Adoptees of Chicago community provides a place for you to engage with resources and a positive environment solely with other adoptees.
Teens: Adoptees of Chicago values the opportunity to provide a space for teenage adoptees to have an independent voice; and to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences exclusively with other adoptees. Additionally, we hope that every adoptee feels engaged at our Socials, explores resources, and joins conversations.
Young Adults: In the adult adoptee group, we strengthen discussion through Socials, conversations, and networking. We encourage attendees to voice their thoughts and explore various topics adult adoptees are facing. Adoptees also have the opportunity to gain a new network of friends in different lines of work.
